Recently my 2 year old grandson Chase asked me to make him a Zorro mask. Eagerly I obliged and cut a triangle of black cloth with two holes for his eyes (from a pair of sweat pants that belonged to my little boys 25 years ago). As he zipped around the house brandishing his plastic sword, I mused at his inborn desire to “fight the bad guys”. Later we watched some of the “child safe” portions of the first Zorro movie – to top the day off.
In one of the last scenes, as most of you movie-watchers know – Catherine Zeta Jones hoists her skirts and runs for the screaming prisoners, helplessly locked behind the barred doors of a burning, mountain stronghold. After one quick glance, she charges those locked doors with fierce determination. She doesn’t hesitate in risking her own life – to free the screaming, doomed faces whose flailing hands are reaching desperately for her help.
Today in prayer God showed me a similar scene – faces screaming – reaching desperately for help from their own prisons of darkness and sin – doomed to the fires of eternal separation from the God who loves them. And if you’re watching these faces on current events of television, you know that time is running out for them. Anyone in the mood to “kick some darkness” and make some eternal history today? As dramatic as it may sound that’s our mission. Instead of running for the border – I’m making the choice to run for the battle; the heroic opportunity you and I have each day to “rescue the perishing” and “set captives free.” How do we do it? –By SURRENDERING our WILL – staying ALERT to the voice of God’s Spirit and MOVING at God’s direction! Prison bars…here I come
